A WALK TO A CURE

Hey! My name is Jeff Kearney and I'm planning a walk from Orlando, FL to New York City in an effort to raise money to help find a cure for multiple myeloma. Yup! Walking! Join me and my friend, Jon Stoudermire, as we walk the East Coast Greenway to New York City.

In 2008 my mom was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma and in December of 2009 she started basic treatments of oral chemotherapy & steroids. After a few months with little effect, IV chemotherapy was added to her regimen. Chemo went on for approximately 10 months placing her in complete remission. After relapsing in 6 months; in April of 2011 she decided to undergo a rigorous stem cell transplant to put the cancer into remission. After 17 days of isolation in one room of Florida Hospital South and suffering some side effects such as losing her hair, strength and all motivation, she was allowed to come home.

Since then she has been out of work and probably can’t go back due to prolonged energy loss and severe pain in the lower extremities as one of the many side effects of multiple myeloma. She is struggling as a single mother because she is not getting disability. The financial responsibilities of bills and medications each month is getting next to impossible to keep up with. Managing to take care of two children with school and extracurricular activities is exhausting on top of the fatigue she feels from the myeloma. My mom attends support meetings to help others dealing with this disease and she always puts others before herself. She is the most selfless woman I know.

This walk will cover over 1200 miles and 10 states. Camping outside and bouncing from couch to couch every night with a hopefully a few hotel stays along the way, hope will be spread with each step. I want to do this walk to raise money to find a cure for multiple myeloma so other families don’t have to be burdened with the troubles a cancer like this brings. Let’s raise awareness and find a way to live a happy, healthy, CANCER-FREE life one step at a time.

Thank you,

Jeff Kearney
